MANTRA MEDITATION:

WHY DO WE EXPERIENCE DIFFICULTIES?

Bhagavad-gita explains that the root cause of all difficulties we face in life is our forgetfulness of our original, spiritual identity. We have lost touch with our eternal, all-knowing and blissful nature and our loving service-relationship with the supremely attractive personality, Sri Krishna. Like a fish out of water, we can find no permanent satisfaction in material life regardless of how hard we try.

WHAT IS A MANTRA?

A bonafide mantra is not an ordinary sound vibration. In Sanskrit “manah” means mind and “tra” means deliverance. A mantra is a transcendental sound vibration especially meant for spiritual upliftment. It has the power to free us from the root cause of all our anxieties and difficulties: misidentification with our body and the world we presently live and act in.

WHAT IS THE HARE KRISHNA MAHA MANTRA?

The Hare Krishna maha mantra is a spiritual call to Krishna to engage us in His loving service. If we carefully chant the Hare Krishna maha mantra regularly, we will become free from all anxieties and attain a peaceful mind. Then we can make further progress in the mantra meditation process, and thus we will gradually experience a re-awakening of our original spiritual identity and our dormant love for Krishna. Further- more our natural, permanent qualities – eternality, knowledge and bliss – will become fully manifest, and we will be eligible to enter into the spiritual reality. The Hare Krishna maha mantra is especially meant to counteract the ill-effects of the present age of quarrel and hypocrisy, and bless us with perfection in one short life-span.

WHAT IS MEDITATION?

Meditation actually means to fix the mind. But we must ask the question: “Fix the mind on what?” To rise above the every day anxieties which disturb the heart and mind, we have to come to the spiritual platform. The easiest way to do that is to regularly and attentively hear and chant the sound vibration Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. This is the perfection of mantra meditation for this age.

HOW TO PERFORM HARE KRISHNA MAHA MANTRA MEDITATION?

There are two kinds of mantra meditation, and both of them are dynamic. One is called japa (personal mantra meditation), and the other is called sankirtana (congregational mantra meditation). Both forms of meditation are concerned with the same thing: total absorption in the spiritual sound vibration of Krishna’s holy name. Anyone can perform this meditation. One’s education, age or bank balance doesn’t matter. This meditation is free and can be practiced by anyone.
l The best way to do personal meditation is to chant on japa (meditation) beads. A traditional string of japa beads has 108 beads strung in a circle with one large bead.
l Hold the beads in your right hand between the thumb and middle finger. Start with the bead after the big centre bead.l Chant the mantra once on each bead. By the time you get back to the big bead you will have chanted the Hare Krishna maha mantra 108 times. This is technically called “one round”.

l Then turn the beads around and start your second round. (Don’t jump over the centre bead, which is known as the “Krishna” or “Meru” bead).
l In the beginning, one round may take you fifteen minutes or so. When you get used to it you will probably chant one round in six to eight minutes.
l Try and be steady in the number of rounds you chant every day. It is better to chant one or two rounds every day, rather than chant many one day and none the next.

l Spend time with others who are experienced in Hare Krishna mantra meditation and openly discuss doubts, problems or successes you have in your meditation practice.
l Always remember that although material benefits may come, mantra meditation is especially meant for spiritual progress. We wish you all the best in your Hare Krishna mantra meditation. Hare Krishna.
